Vintage Gibson Factory Order Numbers or How to date my vintage Gibson guitar

But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows. The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers. It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years. To combat the problem, the company upped its serial number sequence last year from eight digits to nine. For the most part, it looks real. But there are some obvious indicators—if it starts with a five, for instance.

Fender – Super Champ ‘s Black Tolex Rare, Custom and Vintage Amps For sale A guitar amp is an electronic amplifier that functions by increasing the signal of an electric or acoustic guitar so that it can produce sound through a loudspeaker. A common misconception about guitar amps is that they are used solely to amplify sound. Most amplifiers are also able to modify the tone of an instrument by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain frequencies, and by adding effects to create different sounds.

Amps were first used in the s as a way to amplify the sound of acoustic guitars. However, their use became more popular in the s when Hawaiian music surged in popularity. Initially, tone control on guitar amps was simple and could provide a lot of treble boost. However, their low power, and limited control gave poor high treble and bass output. In the s, musicians began to experiment with distortion by overdriving guitar amps. Later on, most guitar amps came with preamplifier distortion controls, fuzz boxes, and other units designed to produce distorted sounds.

Today, the overdrive and distortion produced by guitar amps are important elements to many styles of electric guitar music. Vintage amps come in two standard forms:

Epiphone reps heard Daniel’s amps and hired him to build chassis as well as new designs. (Daniel would go on to start the Danelectro line of guitars and amps in the 50s). The company is famous as the first manufacturer of resonator guitars, which were hugely popular in blues and a bit later bluegrass music. National merged with the Dobro company, another maker of resonator guitars, around to form the National Dobro Corporation. The company began producing electric instruments in the s that included electric guitars, lap steels, mandolins and amplifiers.

These pre-war electric instruments are fairly rare today, though the lap steels pop up with some regularity. The archtop bodies for the guitars were sourced from Regal and then from Kay, but the electronics were developed and manufactured by National-Dobro. National-Dobro was reorganized into the Valco company in Manufacturing of resonator guitars ceased with the introduction of metal rationing in World War II, and the focus was placed on Spanish- and Hawaiian-style guitars and amplifiers.

Starting in , a new serial number system was adopted that allows for reasonably accurate dating of instruments. Valco quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of lap steels, alongside Magnatone, Gibson and Rickenbacker, and the company also sold acoustic guitars with National necks and bodies by Gibson.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.

As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in. But where does that leave everyone else? Well I’m not one to leave you out in the informational cold, so here’s something that I use quite often in dating amplifiers and electric guitars. It’s called the “source-date code”, and it can help determine the approximate age of an electric instrument by the date its components were manufactured.

Source-Date Codes On American made vintage gear, the pots and speakers provide an excellent opportunity to date a piece of equipment by referencing their “source-date code”. The source-date code found on pots and speakers gives the manufacturer and date roughly when the components were made. It may have been some time before the part was installed at the factory, but it still provides a good approximation of when the gear was made.

The source-date code will signify the earliest possible date that the instrument or amp could have been made. This isn’t going to be exact, but it will give you a “ball-park” age.

The progress of this type of work is slow, hence the long hiatus, however, a lot of new data have been collected regarding Fender amplifiers, including production numbers. Advances have been made with regards to the production of tolex amps and it appears that much of this information can be applied to late s tweed amps as well. In addition, the dating-by-serial number tables have been revised and are more accurate. The bad news is that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on the silverface amps.

In dealing with tube amps, one of the questions that gets asked a lot is “what is the Belchfire Quintessential amp like? One brand I hear this sort of question about a lot is Gibson. Since I’m a big Kalamazoo fan and Kalamazoo was a Gibson line, I pay a bit more attention to Gibsons than to some of the other, less common brands. I also discovered that at least one version of the Gibson GA-5 Skylark used exactly the same circuit as the Model One.

Further investigation brought to light the fact that quite a few Gibson amps were extremely close, circuit-wise, to various Fenders. Others were unlike anything else anyone built!

In electronics, a vacuum tube U. For most purposes, the vacuum tube has been replaced by the much smaller and less expensive transistor, either as a discrete device or in an integrated circuit. However, tubes are still used in several specialized applications such as guitar amplifiers also called a valve amp outside the U.

Operation Vacuum tubes, or thermionic valves, are arrangements of electrodes in a vacuum within an insulating, temperature-resistant envelope. Although the envelope was classically glass, power tubes often use ceramic and metal. The electrodes are attached to leads which pass through the envelope via an air tight seal. On most tubes, the leads are designed to plug into a tube socket for easy replacement. The simplest vacuum tubes resemble incandescent light bulbs in that they have a filament sealed in a glass envelope which has been evacuated of all air.

When hot, the filament releases electrons into the vacuum: The resulting negatively-charged cloud of electrons is called a space charge. These electrons will be drawn to a metal “plate” inside the envelope if the plate also called the anode is positively charged relative to the filament or cathode. The result is a current of electrons flowing from filament to plate. This cannot work in the reverse direction because the plate is not heated and cannot emit electrons.

In it’s simplest form a vacuum tube can be created to operate as a diode:
